SHIFA Health Fairs

SHIFA Health Fairs
Project Description
SHIFA works in conjunction with community partners and healthcare groups, such as SeaMar and Molina Healthcare, to provide screenings and referrals at community health fairs approximately once a month. Health Sciences students in Nursing, Dentistry and Pharmacy frequently collaborate with SHIFA at these events. At these fun community based fairs, we provide screenings for and education surrounding blood pressure, BMI, blood glucose and cholesterol. In addition to these core screening services, many health fairs also offer ancillary services such as workers’ rights information, mammograms, massages, and dental services, depending on the specific fair. The fairs target a variety of underserved populations in Seattle and surrounding areas, including Spanish-speaking communities, African-American and African Diaspora, East African, Southeast Asian communities and those experiencing homelessness. Many of our clients have not had previous interactions with the U.S. healthcare system, so it is an opportunity to introduce them to healthcare and referral services in a culturally respectful and safe environment.

Clinic Flow
Medical students will perform blood pressure, weight and blood glucose screening and provide counseling as necessary under the supervision of physician preceptors. In general, clients will complete a basic registration and determine which screening services they wish to utilize. They will then proceed through the screening stations and following a results review, will be provided with health education materials and referral service coordination as needed.
