Since families are not able to be at the hospital at all times of the infant's need, students provide the newborn cuddling and comfort care that are important for neonatal neurological development and  positive later life outcomes.  This can occur with substance withdrawal but also sometimes with newborns that are in CPS custody and/or may not have family at the bedside.
